Mike Oxsaw, I did wonder if it was an annexe of a Southend area college.
Eastammer, my Dad also said it's name could be connected to the South West Essex college at Walthamstow and the fact that that is ( slightly ) further west!

Of course there'd be armed sentry points at strategic entry points like the A12 and A414.
We may have to beef up the A127 border, perhaps south of there could be some kind of 'Nam DMZ style buffer zone.

I sometimes ponder if should be a necessity to build a Trump style wall on the easternmost hard shoulder.
If you weren't in a former Essex part of London prior to the boundary change immigration into the promised land should be a points based system.
Keep Essex for Essex people.

Re: Essex question

The answer to the question must be that The South West Essex Technical College which was in Waltham Forrest predated the opening of the South East Essex Technical College. Which it did by 4 years 1932. Relative to Waltham Forrest Barking was then further East into Essex.
Hope that solves the mystery.
But you might now like to consider why it became North East London Poly? Bit easier that.

Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, was the new favourite of Elizabeth I when she discovered Walter Raleigh had a bike.
Consequently, Essex acquired exclaves in America, and all of UK Essex is South East Essex.

Romford, Upminster, Hornchurch, Ilford, Barking - all in London nowhere near Essex.
The Essex boundary roughly starts at the M25

Postcodes were set up according to the location of the many Central sorting offices.
They were not set up to coincide with administrative boundaries.

Since when did the Post Office decide on governmental administrative boundaries?

Barking has an IG postcode, therefore it's ESSEX.

Maybe it was an annex of a college that originally was in South East Essex.
It's only for financial reasons that places like Romford have Essex as their address - I was born and grew up in Romford, Essex, but from my same childhood home moved from Romford, East London.

No one has come near to answering the question. Barking has never been in south east Essex, so why the name? Southend way is south east Essex.

Sorry, but nobody has answered the original question.
South East Essex Technical College would make sense if it was located in Southend.
Why was it so named when it's clearly in SOUTH WEST Essex ?

I always like how certain areas are written in the press.
If there's a fluffy teddy bear parade it's Romford in Essex.
If there's a murder it's Romford in East London.

Enjoyed that Eddie son... lot of truth's in there... made me laugh when we made it big in the video hire trade we bought a beautiful house in Thorpe Bay that backed onto the golf course... my Mum when answering the phone went from Barking to an old Etonian overnight...
